Four-star junior Tyrell Ward locks in official visits, talks recruitment

DeMatha and Mike Jones have had tons of talent over the past few years, almost decades. The legendary program out of the DMV area produces high-level talent almost every year and it continued even after losing two Top-35 prospects in Hunter Dickinson [Michigan] and Earl Timberlake [Miami].

It was known that several guys would have to flourish and carve out new roles. That includes the Stags’ small forward Tyrell Ward. The 6-foot-7 small forward is by far one of the most underrated and unappreciated players in the 2022 class. He oozes upside, with great size and length, including a major wingspan, Ward has made significant improvements this year.

I’ve had the chance to watch and cover Ward over the last two years and two months ago, I watched him play one of the best games of his young career and it came against a fellow DMV powerhouse in Paul VI. Ward would end up finishing that one as the Stags’ leading scorer, finishing with 26 points en route to a win over PVI.

Ward has finally been able to showcase his talent to America in a lead role and an influential one for the Stags this past season. Now, with a huge summer of AAU ahead, I think he will benefit even more and his recruitment will show that.

So where do things stand with Ward’s recruitment? He broke it all down for Stockrisers.com.

Which schools are heavily involved?

“Indiana, Maryland, Georgetown, LSU, Michigan, and Xavier.”

Any new schools?

“Arizona State, Miami, Illinois, and Villanova.”

Discuss your conversation with Mike Woodson and your overall thoughts on Indiana?

“He talked about me being an impact player from the start and also bringing the NBA style with him and using me as a positionless player, and helping me develop my body right away to adjust to the Big Ten.”

How about Georgetown? What is coach Ewing’s message to you and will you visit?

“Coach Ewing talks about wanting me to stay home and be one of the guys and really play a large role my first year if I were to choose Georgetown. I visit on June 4th.”

How about Michigan? What’s the deal with them.

“I love them as a program. They’re always a Top-25 team but they talk about me about rebuilding the chemistry with Hunter [Dickinson] as we did at DeMatha. They still haven’t offered yet but they text and call throughout the week.”

Finally, where will you definitely be visiting?

“Right now just Georgetown, Maryland, and Xavier.”
