Four-star junior Austin Nunez discusses his recruitment
Last fall, Austin Nunez checked in at just 5-foot-10 and was your average small-ball sharpshooter. Fast forward to now, the four-star incoming junior stands at 6-foot-2 and weighs over 170-pounds, and has landed 10+ high-major offers since last year.
The Texas native holds offers from Baylor, LSU, Arkansas, Texas A&M, Memphis, Oklahoma State, others.
Nunez first appeared on the court this summer in July when his AAU program, Texas Hardwork, made its return to the court. He was impressive as he was all season long during his sophomore year campaign.
In his first game back he hit six threes and was extremely impressive and it drew the attention of Virginia’s Tony Bennett who now is in full pursuit of Nunez. Mind you, this was three months ago but Nunez has kept that same flow going entering his junior campaign.
He discussed his recruitment with Stockrisers.com
Which schools are heavily involved?
“Texas, Texas A&M, Oregon, Arkansas, Virginia are all heavily involved right now.”
What are your thoughts on Virginia and Tony Bennett?
“Virginia, I think I fit in well with a program like them. I like the way they play, I like Coach Bennett, he’s a great guy and he likes how I can shoot the ball off the dribble and catch and shoot. He also likes how I get to the floater and not all the way to the rim.”
How about a program like Arkansas, you virtually met with your mother and the staff recently?
”Arkansas I like them too, I like the way they play, it’s fast and I think I’m a good fit for that. They like how I am in the pick and roll and my shooting ability. I like Coach Musselman and Coach Patrick, they are both great guys, and also everyone on staff has texted me to give me advice to better my game.”
The local Texas Longhorns are also on you heavy, correct?
“Texas, I like Coach Shaka and Cody, they text me a lot and they’ll ask me how I’m doing or what I’m working on in my workouts. I like that I think I fit in well with what Shaka wants at the point guard spot, he lets the guards go and I think I’m a good fit for that.”
Any type of commitment timeline as you’re entering your junior year?
“I don’t want to say I have a commitment time, we don’t really know. We are waiting it out right now with what coaches are going to do.”
Describe the game of Austin Nunez.
“My game, I’ve gotten my shot more consistent, getting my handle better. I’ve gotten a lot stronger, my defense has gotten better. A lot of aspects of my game have definitely improved.”
