It has been quite the week for Darius Wabbington, five-star big man out of Sunnyslope High School (Arizona). The 6-foot-10 dynamo of a big man took home MVP honors at HoopHall West, and his team captured yet another trophy during Wabbington’s junior year.

His MVP award was well-deserved. Wabbington averaged 21.0 points, 10 boards, and nearly shot 50/40/90 across three games at the loaded HoopHall West event.

“I feel like my biggest improvement came on the defensive end,” Wabbington told Stockrisers.com. He averaged two blocks per game in the event and has been a menace on the defensive end all season long.

His individual success has been evident, but his lone goal for his junior year wasn’t anything directed towards just himself. His goal was for his team to win a state title, and with the way they are playing, that goal is very much realistic after a very successful start to the new year.

His recruitment continues to be busy. Several schools are in hot pursuit with a new blue blood creeping into the mix. Wabbington discussed it with Stockrisers.com.

Which schools are heavily in the mix?

”Arizona, Louisville, Purdue, USC, and Texas.”

Any new schools?

”Kentucky and Minnesota.”

Kentucky’s interest, where does it stand, and have you talked with Coach Pope?

“No, the assistant coach has just texted with me a couple of times, and they are a good program.”

Arizona?

”They’re doing well. I like their style of play, and they’re definitely one of my top options right now.”

Louisville?

”I like Coach Hamilton, and they’ve got a good program. I’ve talked to Coach [Pat] Kelsey a little as well.”

USC?

”I’ve gone on an unofficial visit there. It’s a beautiful campus, and I have a good relationship with all the coaches. I like how it’s close to home.”

Purdue?

”I like their program and history of developing big men.”

Texas?

”I think Sean Miller is a really good coach. I’ve been watching him since he was at Arizona, and I like the assistants at Texas with him.”

Have you decided when you will take visits?

”Yeah. I’m waiting till the Spring and Fall.”
