Top-five incoming junior Tre Johnson talks recruitment, planned visit
It’s another year with the state of Texas having an elite-level recruit. Look at the 2024 recruiting class and Dallas native Tre Johnson screams off the board, and he hasn’t slowed down.
The 6-foot-6 prospect, Johnson has become a very popular prospect in his class and he proved why all high school season going into this AAU cycle. He averaged 23.7 points and 5.8 rebounds per game this season for Lake Highlands in Dallas, Texas.
Johnson has continued to draw the attention of high-major coaches all summer long. Playing for Team Griffin on the Nike EYBL circuit, Johnson had totals of 16.0 points per game and his shooting splits didn’t jump off the stat sheet but he’s proven his worth as an elite scorer, getting buckets from multiple levels.
He leads blue chip recruitment, being pursued by some of the nation’s top programs, and is also being targeted by some of the available professional routes, including the NBA G-League Ignite, which has produced several NBA Draft picks in the program's first few years up and running.
The likings of Duke, Kentucky, Gonzaga, LSU, Arkansas, Baylor, and Texas, are just a few of the many programs going after Johnson. He hinted that he’s working on a potential visit with an SEC school coming this fall, as well.
Johnson discussed his recruitment, along with his game for Stockrisers.com.
Which schools would you say are heavily involved?
“Gonzaga, Duke, Kentucky, Texas, Baylor, LSU, are schools that are on me heavily.”
Any new schools in pursuit?
“Stanford and Nebraska.”
What’s it like being recruited by Duke and Jon Scheyer, what is their plan for you?
“It’s a blessing to be recruited by Duke. They’re a top school and I watched them growing up. They have a good coaching staff and their plan is to help me develop and be a one-and-done, as well as to thrive in the NBA [if I went there].”
How about Kentucky?
“It’s a good relationship, we are still developing the relationship but they’re like Duke, another school that I watched growing up.”
What about a school like Gonzaga?
“Gonzaga is a good program. They do a very good job with their player development. They say that I can come in and be another one-and-done for them.”
When will you begin planning visits?
“I think I have a visit set up on September 17th to Texas.”
Any other schools you working on a visit with?
“Gonzaga, Kentucky, Duke, Stanford, and other schools have been talking about [setting up] visits but I don’t have anything set yet.”
Describe Tre Johnson’s game.
“I describe my game as a two-way playmaker.”
Thoughts on the Pro Route and are you open to it?
“I’m open to the college route or the pro route. I’ve heard from Overtime Elite and the G-League Ignite.”
