Four-star junior Tyrell Ward discusses his recruitment
DeMatha and Mike Jones have had tons of talent over the past few years, almost decades. The legendary program out of the DMV area produces high-level talent almost every year and it continued even after losing two Top-35 prospects in Hunter Dickinson [Michigan] and Earl Timberlake [Miami].
It was known that several guys would have to flourish and carve out new roles. That includes the Stags’ small forward Tyrell Ward. The 6-foot-7 small forward is by far one of the most underrated and unappreciated players in the 2022 class. He oozes upside, with great size and length, including a major wingspan, Ward has made significant improvements this year.
I’ve had the chance to watch and cover Ward over the last two years and this weekend I watched him play one of the best games of his young career and it came against a fellow DMV powerhouse in Paul VI. Ward would end up finishing that one as the Stags’ leading scorer, finishing with 26 points en route to a win over PVI.
As for his recruitment, plenty of high-major programs have keened in on the four-star junior. Most recently, the Indiana Hoosiers extended him a scholarship offer as they are also in heavy pursuit of Ward’s teammate at DeMatha, Rodney Rice.
Ward discussed his recruitment with Stockrisers.com. He discussed his newest scholarship offer from Archie Miller and the Hoosiers, Georgetown’s intrigue, his season, and why he doesn’t pay attention to naysayers.
Tyrell, which programs are heavily involved in your recruitment?
“Georgia, Seton Hall, Virginia Tech, LSU, and Georgetown are the most involved.”
How about the newest programs to enter the mix?
“Michigan, UNC, Indiana, and New Mexico are the newest schools that have contacted me recently.”
Georgetown seems to be heavily involved, thoughts on the Hoyas?
“I like how Georgetown plays, they have a system built with guys who play similar to me. I can see myself fitting into the system nicely. The coaching staff is great and they stay in contact heavily, mostly from Coach Patrick Ewing.”
Indiana offered a scholarship yesterday, thoughts on the Hoosiers and the offer?
“Indiana is newest school to enter the mix. They’ve been texting me since the St. James Tournament and called and offered today. I love the basketball environment out there and their gym with fans is one of the best in the country.”
How would you best describe the game of Tyrell Ward?
“I would describe my game as very versatile. When I play in games I don’t focus on one part of my game like scoring, I try to dominate every aspect of the game.”
You’re extremely underrated, what would you say to the naysayers?
“I try not to pay attention to that, It makes me go harder because I’ve been doubted all my life.”
