Basketball Recruiting

Top-20 sophomore Ja'Kobe Walter talks early recruitment

Texas has made its case for having one of the strongest basketball areas in the nation. As for the future classes coming through Texas, the state’s 2022 and 2023 classes are screaming potential. The 2023 class has one of its headliners in Ja’Kobe Walter.

Your prototypical (currently) 6-foot-5 guard, Walter oozes potential and it starts with his offensive presences. He could score at all three levels and read a defense really well. His length at the guard position is also scary from an opposing team's perspective. Walter is still growing and already has a large wingspan for a guard.

His recruitment at this stage for a 2023 prospect is quite impressive. He’s already landed several key regional offers and is now landing interest from several out-of-state programs. One program discussed is Alabama, where Walter was born.

Walter talked his recruitment to its fullest with Stockrisers.com, he also gave a personal scouting report at the end.

So which programs have extended offers?

Walter: “Alabama, SMU, Memphis, Baylor, Oklahoma, and TCU are my offers.”

What about programs that have interest?

Walter: “Texas Tech, Texas, Texas A&M, Ohio State, and Minnesota.”

Who are the newer ones?

Walter: “Minnesota and Ohio State.”

Talk your first offer from Baylor, how was that?

Walter: “I didn’t really expect it. Me and Coach Brooks would talk to each other [Walter contacted him] occasionally and just catch up on life and practice.”

Memphis also offered this summer, thoughts on them?

Walter: “Memphis was a big-time offer for me and they told me they focus on developing players instead of winning a championship.”

Alabama, where you are originally from, thoughts on them?

Walter: “Alabama was super unexpected and cool to me because I was born there and I’m an Alabama football fan.”

SMU?

Walter: “I’ve also talked to SMU’s Assistant, Coach King and we would talk about life in general as well as talking about practice for me and for them.”

What about a newer school like Minnesota?

Walter: “I’ve directly talked to Coach Kyle from Minnesota and he was telling me about the city and how welcoming it is there including him telling me about the facility and how they work things there.”

And a regional powerhouse like Texas Tech?

Walter: “Tech was also telling me how they run things and how they would like to jump on recruiting me early because they believe I have what it takes.”

Finally, describe your game, who is Ja’Kobe Walter?

Walter: “I would describe my game as a mixture of shooting and I could also score at the basket if you play upon me. I say I’m a scorer and will make the big play in crunch time situations. Also, I like to hustle and play defense. I will take charges every chance I get and will dive for loose balls.”
