Over the last few years, New York City has been under-the-radar as far as basketball recruiting goes.

There’s a handful of guys that were sent to the D1 ranks, but, not many over the last few years have been able to have that huge national breakout just yet coming out of New York City, but for Spencer Mahoney, he’s looking to put the city back on the map.

Mahoney is a 6-foot-8 rising junior who attends Xaverian High School in Brooklyn, NY. He plays his AAU basketball for the PSA Cardinals, who have most recently sent Cole Anthony, James Bouknight, among others to the NBA over the last few years. Mahoney isn’t the most well-known, but, that will change as he’s bound for a huge rise.

For those who don’t know about his game, Mahoney is a two-guard, or the three, and has great size and is a capable plus defender. He’s a three-level scorer and can hit the outside shot at a very good rate. In addition, he plays his role and will clearly do whatever it takes on both ends to secure a victory.

My favorite part of his game is his ability to use his size and get to the rim. If not, he’s taking the outside shot with a very good shot at landing it.

So, what does Mahoney have to say about his game, recruitment, and his upcoming junior season? He answered all of the hard-hitting questions for Stockrisers.com.

Which schools are heavily involved?

“DePaul, Cal, Harvard, and all the schools that offered are heavily involved.”

Any newer schools?

“West Virginia and St.John’s both reached out recently.”

Briefly describe your thoughts on the Syracuse offer?

“Cuse offer felt great, Coach Griffin’s pitch was that my game would fit perfectly into their system and that it is close to home.”

Texas A&M?

“Texas A&M was a great offer because they are in the SEC and they have produced a lot of NBA talent, also a great program.”

How do the first few Power Five offers feel?

“First few offers feel good, just fuels me to continue to stay humble and work harder.“

Break down your game.

“I’m an unselfish, High-IQ guy who understands how to play the game the right way. I know how to use my size to my advantage to get my shot off. I am a good shooter and am working on using my length to become a better defender. Also a good ball handler for my size. I can play 2-4 if needed.”

What are your junior year goals?

“Goals Junior year to become more explosive, and tighten up my handle, as well as work on having a high motor at all times. Of course bringing my School a city Championship as well.”
