As a high school freshman, Jefferson’s (OR.) Marquis ‘Mookie’ Cook had as much of an impact as your average high school senior. Put that into perspective, just a young kid who finished middle school months prior, instantly made his high school program a title contender.

Cook, a 6-foot-6 wing, had Jefferson as a 6A title favorite entering his first season with the program and was a large part of the 16-game winning streak the school went on last season. He’s rated as a five-star prospect and is placed within the Top-10 prospects in the 2023 class.

What will you get in Cook on the floor? he’s your ultimate wing prospect. Can score the ball from all levels, his three-point shot is still improving, rebounds the ball well, and is an excellent defender. He plays with a lot of intensity and being a ‘phenom’ early in high school has definitely been a major learning curve, one that he’s persevered in.

Cook took some time away from the court (rare) to discuss his early recruitment and his game with Stockrisers.com.

Which schools have extended a scholarship offer?

“Washington, Washington State, Oregon, Pacific, San Francisco, Bryant, Jackson State, Delaware State, and Southern.”

Which schools have shown interest throughout the early process?

“USC, Memphis, Gonzaga, Pepperdine, UConn, and that’s about it.”

How will you approach the recruiting process?

“Probably keep on doing how I’m doing it now and try and build a relationship with all of the coaches that I talk with.”

What would the opportunity to play for Oregon be like for you?

“It would be an amazing experience if I were to play at Oregon, definitely. I’m a Portland, Oregon raised a kid and I have a great connection with the coaching staff also. Just hearing that crowd every game it would be electrifying.”

Give me the scouting report on Mookie Cook.

“I play both sides of the ball, offense, and defense. I can facilitate, I’m very versatile at 6-foot-7, can guard any position 1-4, run the court hard, I can shoot the three as well as bring the ball up. All-around game and I’m a team player.”

Would reclassifying up ever be an option?

“Reclassifying up would possibly be an option. Maybe junior year possibly wanting to go to college early, it could be an option.”
