2021's Kuluel Mading talks his recruitment, new schools enter the mix

August 25, 2020

When you look on paper you'd expect 6-foot-10 junior Kuluel Mading to have more high-major programs involved. Has all the intangibles and more, he's is known for his elite rim-protecting but offensively could run the floor and score the ball at all three levels.

Among the college programs heavily involved?

VCU, Providence, Hampton, CofC, UNCW, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, and several others.

"All these schools and I communicate all the time just trying to build a relationship talking about how would fit in on and off the court," Mading told

Amongst the programs listed, Wake Forest, along with Penn State, James Madison, and Vanderbilt, is the newest involved. Steve Forbes already has landed several prospects but is trying to gain familiarity across the state, starting with Mading.

Mading virtually met with Wake's staff last month, he told It won't be the first virtual visit he's completed as he has done ones with VCU, Providence, and most recently, Iowa.

"VCU, Providence, and Iowa's virtual visits were similar in various ways, from showing me their style of play and how I would fit into their system, a lot about how fantastic their communities are, and the different facilities which are all amazing."

"They also went more in-depth off the court as well as talking about how close-knit everything is and telling me how I would also fit in academically as well as socially and athletically."

Mading says his recruitment is '100%' open and is looking forward to taking visits when campus visits begin once again. He says that VCU, Hampton, UNCW, Providence, and Wake Forest are the programs he'd like to get an in-person look at, along with others.

He’s also recently heard from St. John’s, Georgia, and Oregon State. They are expected to complete calls with him and build a relationship. I expect Mading to take his process at a different pace as more programs are expected to enter the mix.
