Four-star sophomore Rylan Griffen leads a national recruitment, Duke reaches out

Entering day one of the contacting period, where 2022's can now be contacted by college coaches, we find out who they've had on their radar for the entire spring. One prospect who had high-majors on him already but watched his stock bolster, Texas native Rylan Griffen.

247Sports shows him as the No. 7 rated player in Texas, which shows the competition he faces because despite being seventh, his overall ranking is No. 76, meaning six Top-75 prospects are ranked in front of the 6-foot-5 wing. As for my Stockrisers’ grade, I have him as a projected power-five prospect and a potential Top-30 recruit.

Just 15 minutes after midnight, Griffen had already heard from Texas, Kansas, Illinois, Vanderbilt, Texas Tech, Baylor, Kansas State, and Ole Miss. Following his call from Chris Beard, Texas Tech would end up becoming the first program to offer Griffen after the contact period opened.

Later on, more programs got involved as Duke and Arizona, along with Oklahoma State and Baylor, became the newest schools to get involved. Duke's Jon Scheyer was able to call and speak with Griffen, who said "I talked the longest with Coach Scheyer."

Kansas' Bill Self would also call during the evening. Jayhawks already offered him so it isn't a new program, it's one familiar to him. They had staff reaching out to him since last night. Oklahoma, Texas, would then offer at night time, giving him three offers since the period started.

A newer program involved with Griffen: Memphis. 

“I really liked them when they face timed me. Coach Toppert was really cool, he kept it real and he sends me a lot of film like Devin Bookers and tells me what I need to improve on. I really like that school and Coach Toppert.”

In addition, he recently completed a virtual visit with Kansas State and placed his thoughts on them:

“I Virtually visited Kansas State earlier when the coaches can call us. They all have a really cool coaching staff and a coach I’m very familiar with in Coach Southwell. We talk every day. We really never talk about basketball and that’s what I like to see from a coach to not make it feel like a business.”

Griffen capped off this discussion by saying ‘it’s a blessing’ to be in the spot he’s in with his recruitment, saying being recruited by the Big 12, programs like Duke and Memphis and others, is an honor.
