Four-star incoming senior Travis Perry talks his recruitment
Prolific, and entertaining, those are just a few words to describe the game of Eddyville, KY. and Lyon County guard Travis Perry.
Why you ask?
The 6-foot-2 guard is arguably one of the nation’s most prolific high school scorers. Playing for his father at his very small, but tight-knit school, Perry surpassed the 4,000-point mark earlier in his junior season. In addition, he put up electrifying numbers and ultimately put himself on the map all year long.
Perry averaged an astonishing 32.2 points, 6.2 rebounds, 5.8 assists, and 4.7 steals during his junior campaign this past season. It isn’t just his scoring though. I saw major strides off the ball this season for Perry, in addition to that, his playmaking has gone up a notch during this AAU season and I know that’s an area that he was trying to improve in.
Now, playing with Indiana Elite of the Adidas Circuit, Perry has showcased his skill in front of even more coaches. His recruitment is a pure reflection of just how much these college coaches want to add a prolific scorer, also willing to be a leader and do whatever it takes to win.
His game has earned him scholarship offers from schools like Indiana, Kentucky, Purdue, Louisville, and Cincinnati, amongst many others, and I expect more schools to get involved. Perry’s rise is one similar to Reed Sheppard, a fellow Kentucky native who became a McDonald’s All-American and is now a Kentucky Wildcat.
Stockrisers.com spoke with Perry on Thursday evening and we had a nice discussion on some of the teams in pursuit.
Which schools are the heaviest involved in your recruitment?
“Purdue, Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, Cincinnati, Florida, Stanford, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, WKU, Missouri, Virginia, and UCLA are all heavily involved.”
Any new schools?
“Not really. UCLA and LSU have not offered and Florida is the most recent to do so and offer.”
How would you describe your relationship with Coach Calipari and the UK staff, what are they pitching?
“I have a great relationship with Coach Cal. He’s a very friendly guy and a lot of fun to be around. He is about his players and wants to get the best out of them for his team. Their pitch is that Kentucky is a winning program and you have to want it to play there but it will give you great opportunities to be successful. Coach Cal’s track record speaks for itself and he wants the best for his players' futures. I have good relationships with Coach Cal and Coach O both, I really like the staff.”
How about your newest offer from Florida, what are your thoughts on them?
“They’re pitching their system and style of play and how it fits with the way I play. I have had great conversations with Coach Golden and Coach Hartman, we’re just building a relationship.”
How about Virginia, I feel like that’s one who has been in for a while, thoughts?
“Yes sir, I have had a great relationship with Coach Bennett for a long time. Started talking to Coach Vandross recently as well and I’m building a good relationship with him. They play winning basketball and they have a great system.”
Are you planning any visits yet?
“I’m still in the process of setting up a lot of the schools that are prioritizing me. Don’t have many set in stone right now but I have some in the works.”
When would you like to trim down a list or speed up the process?
“I have a really busy June traveling but will probably try to trim a list down relatively soon. I want to see a few places and keep growing relationships, then will trim down a list.”
