Basketball Recruiting

2022's Patrick Wessler becoming a national priority, updates recruitment

This season, I’ve been watching plenty of basketball nationally. One state I’ve covered heavily over the last few months is North Carolina. That’s where I continued to watch Combine Academy, which has five-star sophomore Robert Dillingham on their roster. While watching the Goats, I came across a shot-blocking forward on Combine that goes by the name Patrick Wessler.

Wessler is a 7-foot-1, 235-pound center from Charlotte, North Carolina. Recently in a loss to Word Of God Christian Academy, Wessler continued to show his growth and his intimidating stature on the defensive end.

In talking with Wessler’s coaches, one thing I’ve been able to pick up is that Wessler has had a very nice development over the past few months. Many note that Wessler is also a 4.0 GPA student and keeps it heavy on basketball.

He holds scholarship offers from Creighton, East Carolina, Virginia Tech, USF, Elon, Wake Forest, Ohio State, USC, NC State, and others. He’s a recruit that I believe will get a lot of attention, especially when AAU season moves along with its planned schedule for the spring and summer. Regardless, he will see major growth in his recruitment if he remains on this path.

He talked about his recruitment with Stockrisers.com and had plenty of scoop regarding his visit plans and visits he has already taken.

Which schools are heavily in the mix?

“Providence, Virginia Tech, Iowa, USC, Ohio State, NC State, Ole Miss are heavily involved.”

Any new programs in the hunt?

“Ohio State, NC State, and USC are the newest ones they’ve all offered in the last few days.”

Talk NC State. Your thoughts on your visit and the scholarship offer?

“I had a great visit today on campus. I was able to watch them work out then I took a tour around campus and at the end I talked with Coach Keatts and he offered me a scholarship. NC State is really really interesting and I’m looking forward to further developing our relationship. The visit was amazing and I really enjoyed it.”

You also landed an offer from Ohio State. Your thoughts on them and the offer?

“I did a zoom about a week or so ago with the coaching staff where we really looked at OSU and kind of did a little virtual tour and talked a lot about athletics and academics. Today, Coach Holtmann called me as a follow-up to the zoom and offered me a scholarship.”

What are your future visit plans looking like?

“I’m going on unofficial visits to Wake Forest and Virginia Tech at the end of June and I’ve got an official to Providence scheduled for September 10th and the plan is to visit more schools in the fall when students are back.”

Commitment timeline?

“The plan right now is to commit sometime in the fall.”
