Top-50 junior Tyler Nickel talks his recruitment, will narrow list

Tyler Nickel is one of the best scorers in Virginia high school basketball history.

The 6-foot-8, 210-pound forward is less than 900 points away from surpassing the points record set by Mac McClung. Nickel had an excellent junior season, once again. The Prolific scorer was watched by us in January where he would end up dropping 38-points. Nickel has asserted himself as one of the nation's most efficient, yet skilled scorers.

After his sophomore season, Nickel was over 1,400 points over his high school career. He maintained that feat and has narrowed himself quite close to breaking that point record. It has led him to very active recruitment, which includes many high-major programs.

Nickel briefly discussed his recruitment with Stockrisers.com.

Which programs would you say are heavily involved in your recruitment?

“Most involved right now is probably UNC, WVU, NC State, Virginia Tech, and LSU.”

Who’s the newest school to enter the mix?

“West Virginia is the newest offer and that happened this past Saturday.”

Discuss your relationship with UNC’s staff? Where do things stand with them?

“Head Coach Hubert Davis and Coach May have been the ones recruiting me and they have been very active recently with me and in my recruitment as of late.”

How about a program like Virginia Tech?

“Virginia Tech’s coaching staff and style of play is something that I believe fits me well.”

Your newest offer from West Virginia, how do you feel about them?

“West Virginia is always a powerhouse and as I said with these other schools, I believe the playstyle would fit me well.”

Any idea of a commitment timeline?

“I will cut my list on September 5th and then likely commit in November.”

How do you feel your season went and where do you want your game to evolve?

“Season went well, averaged 34 points per game and got back to the state championship but unfortunately lost. I want to evolve more in every aspect of the game but especially in defensive concepts.”
