The Portal: Marshall transfer Jarrod West talks his recruitment
Standout.
For four years Jarrod West was the standout guard for the Marshall Thundering Hurd. The 5-foot-11 guard from Clarksburg, West Virginia entered his name in the portal just a few days ago and in an instant, he heard from nearly ten high-major programs and coaches are in hot pursuit.
So, what do these coaches see in West? The four-year standout at Marshall scored over 1,200 points in his college career and was one of the top two-way guards not only in his conference but, in the nation. He remained consistent over his four years with the program proving himself not only as an elite three-level scorer but also as a defensive menace.
Don’t let his size fool you, this man will compete night in and night out.
Last season, he averaged 12.5 points, 6.3 assists, and over two steals per game. His shooting spreads are also a major reason coaches are heavily involved. One word I mentioned when talking about his shooting is his efficiency, he shot 45% from the field and over 40% from the three-point range, which is pretty good spreads at the guard spot.
West took the time during his busy transfer process to sit-down with Stockrisers.com and we discussed the latest in his recruitment.
Who has reached out to you since you entered the portal?
“Louisville, Pittsburgh, Ohio State, Florida, Rhode Island, Georgetown, Wichita State, Texas, Georgia Tech, West Virginia, Duquesne, Maryland, Miami, Washington State, and Oklahoma State.”
You zoomed with Pittsburgh’s staff yesterday, what was the pitch and your overall thoughts?
“Coach Capel thinks I’m a great fit and that I can be an extension of him on the court. They have been honest with me and believe I have a great opportunity to get on the court and contribute. Not to mention they play in the ACC. They have made it clear they really want me.”
How about your zoom with Louisville, what are your thoughts on them and the staff?
“Coach Mack thinks I’m a great fit and they have made it clear they want me. They believe they have the team to win the ACC and compete for a national championship. He also thinks I’m gonna have a great opportunity to come in a contribute.”
Your zoom last night with Wichita State’s staff, how did that go?
“They think I have a great chance to come in and play right away. With the season they had and the pieces they have coming back, they feel like they can make an NCAA tournament run. They won the American conference and they sell out every home game. Coach Brown thinks I’m a great fit.”
As far as a commitment timeline, when would you like to decide?
“I’d like to commit sooner rather than later, probably in the next week or so.”
How would you best describe your game?
“I’m a high IQ PG who is a high-level defender. Someone who can shoot the three with range consistently. Someone who can run a team, handle the ball, score, and create.”
What does Jarrod West bring to a college program?
“Whatever program gets me will get a hard-working high character person that will do anything to win. I’ll put the time in and give it all I have. Lastly, I’m a winner and that’s what’s gotten me to this point.”
