Basketball Recruiting

2022's Patrick Wessler continues to see recruitment grow

This season, I’ve been watching plenty of basketball nationally. One state I’ve covered heavily over the last few months is North Carolina. That’s where I continued to watch Combine Academy, which has five-star sophomore Robert Dillingham on their roster. While watching the Goats, I came across a shot-blocking forward on Combine that goes by the name Patrick Wessler.

Wessler is a 7-foot-1, 235-pound center from Charlotte, North Carolina. Recently in a loss to Word Of God Christian Academy, Wessler continued to show his growth and his intimidating stature on the defensive end.

In talking with Wessler’s coaches, one thing I’ve been able to pick up is that Wessler has had a very nice development over the past few months. Many note that Wessler is also a 4.0 GPA student and keeps it heavy on basketball.

He holds scholarship offers from Creighton, East Carolina, Virginia Tech, USF, Elon, and Wake Forest. He’s a recruit that I believe will get a lot of attention, especially if AAU season moves along with its planned schedule for the spring and summer. Regardless, he will see major growth in his recruitment if he remains on this path.

Wessler talked about his recruitment and his game with Stockrisers.com.

Which programs are heavily involved in your recruitment?

“In alphabetical order, Ole Miss, South Florida, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest are involved the most but I am in contact with all schools involved.”

When do you say all of them, who else is involved?

“Elon, New Orleans, Creighton, East Carolina, UNCC, and Mercer.”

Discuss one of your scholarships offers in Wake Forest, thoughts on them?

“I think they have a great new coaching staff. I’ve really enjoyed my interactions with Coach McKie and Coach Forbes. They play with a lot of synergy on the court and I really like their style of play.”

How about Mike Young’s program at Virginia Tech?

“I’ve really enjoyed watching them play [this season]. Coach Young does a great job with his big men. Their inside-out approach is something that intrigues me.”

And how about another heavily involved program, Ole Miss?

“I’ve definitely developed a very strong relationship with their assistant coach, Coach Hamilton. Of course, the SEC is a great conference and that would be an exciting challenge.”

More on your game, you cause tons of problems for opponents defensively.

“On defense, I’m primarily a rim protector and rebounder, but, I am also able to step out and defend the pick and roll.”

How about your offensive game?

“I’m primarily a post and midrange scorer but I’m also capable of stepping out and hitting an open three-pointer.”

Breakdown your season and the expectation for your team?

“This season, I think we’ve played well. We’re starting to put it all together. We’ve lost some games but at the end of it all, it’s only going to make us better. I think the sky is the limit for us.”
