You walk into a gym and your first watch BJ Edwards play, your first reaction will likely be an ‘ooh’ or an ‘ah’ all due to the skillset the 6-foot-2 guard out of Knoxville Catholic showcases.
Brian Edwards Jr, the crafty-elite guard out of Knoxville, Tennessee. He plays his AAU basketball with the B Maze Elite program, where he’s coached by Bobby Maze. Edwards provides almost everything and doesn’t lack any sort of size at his position.
He posted 19 points per game along with seven assists and six rebounds during his sophomore season. Leading the offensive unit, he catapulted his team to a 25-4 record which included a victory in the state championship game.
He also leads himself quite the recruitment, one that includes a hometown program, a rising ACC program, and plenty of others. The state champion and the leader of Knoxville Catholic’s offense discussed his recruitment with Stockrisers.com.
Which programs are involved currently?
Edwards: “The same schools are involved right now, you know Seton Hall, Tennessee, Wake Forest, Western Kentucky, Georgia, Auburn, and Virginia Tech.”
Tennessee, the hometown program, what is their pitch?
Edwards: “They want me to join them and build up and recruit some guys for my class. They also say that they can really develop me and get me into that next level for the NBA. Also, they say they’re the program that can stay on top of me and keep me focused, they don’t sugar coat anything and just push me to be the best version of myself.”
Auburn’s pitch to you is?
Edwards: “They also just know I can come in and play good minutes for them. With the transition offense they have, I would fit in perfectly and play alongside Sharife [Cooper] in practice and in-game is just going to better me as well and just get me to the next level.”
And how about let’s say a program like Georgia, what is their pitch?
Edwards: “They really just feel like I can come in and score the ball for them and be a leader. They also said they can develop me to that next level knowing that Coach [Crean] has a lot of guys in the league.”
You had a recent zoom call with Wake Forest, how was that?
Edwards: “Wake Forest’s virtual meeting was about just how I could make a quick impact with how they play their two’s and three’s and they’re losing their senior guard the year I’d be coming up so it could be a good fit for me.”
What about your recent zoom with Tennessee’s staff?
Edwards: “Tennessee’s zoom was about how they can develop me into a great player to get to the league. Also, we talked about just staying home which would be good for my close friends and family to watch me play. They also said that although Kennedy [Chandler] is coming in, they could see me playing with him and he could also make me better in practice.”
