Chris Holtmann and his staff got some big news on Sunday night. Top-50 sophomore Kalen Etzler announced his commitment to the Buckeyes.
Etzler held several offers and landed one from the Buckeyes this past week and didn’t hesitate to commit.
“I committed early because I knew it’s where I wanted to be and it was a perfect fit, lots of pride in the program and it’s gonna be nice to have two years to build my game around the program,” Etzler said.
When getting a recruit early, there’s the narrative that they will wind up decommitting at some point, we’ve seen it with several top-50 prospects over the past few years. Etzler had his take on that narrative and Buckeye fans should be glad to hear it:
“Yes, i’m loyal and a man of my word. It would have to be something extreme for me to decommit. I think if you commit you need to do your best to back up your word.”
The offer came on Thursday night, as we stated earlier, but Etzler had discussed this with his family weeks back and after getting the offer just decided to pull the trigger.
“I knew it was time because weeks prior i was discussing the commitment with my family,” Etzler said.
The commitment from Etzler did boost Ohio State to the top class in the country for 2021, according to several news outlets.
How will Etzler help improve that class, he will help recruit, starting with another in-state prospect.
“I will definitely help. I’ll start recruiting kids.”
“Meechie Johnson is one.”
“Malaki Branham in particular, he’s special.”
Branham is another sophomore out of St Vincent’s-St Mary’s high school in Akron. He landed his offer from Ohio State recently and now Etzler will make his push.
